Lumos Nigeria lauds Presidency’s plan to provide 5 million Solar Home Systems to bridge energy deficit

Lumos Nigeria, Africa’s leading provider of high-quality solar home systems, has commended the Nigerian Presidency on its plan to install five (5) million Solar Home System to serve 25 million households currently unconnected to the National Grid across the country.

Buhari reacts as Nigerians say he's not in charge - Daily Post Nigeria
President Buhari

The report by the Economic Sustainability Committee (ESC), chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo which was presented to President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja has projected that unemployment rate which was 23.1% (or 20.9m people) at the end of 2018 is expected to rise to 33.6% (or 39.4 million people) at the end of 2020, if urgent steps are not taken.

In response to this, Adepeju Adebajo, CEO, Lumos Nigeria said, â€œthe government’s plan to invest in 5 million solar home systems across Nigeria, is an important development. Energy is a core pillar of economic growth and will be a strong catalyst to sustainable economic recovery, post-COVID-19. Lumos is the market leader in affordable solar home systems, providing access to power to homes, micro and small businesses nationwide, and we understand the impact of power on the quality of life and livelihoods. We applaud this important initiative and will work with the Nigerian government to make it a reality.”

Nigeria, plagued by a large energy supply deficit with only 33% of households and 30% of businesses having stunted access to grid electricity, needed to leverage her abundant renewable solar energy source to accelerate plugging the
enormous gap.

Deploying solar home systems for emergency national energy provision is not new to Lumos Nigeria. Backed by a grant from All On, an organisation established to increase access to energy for under-served and unserved consumers by the SHELL Company , Lumos recently installed solar-powered systems to power primary health center’s and emergency response centers across Nigeria in response to the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.

The installed systems have been powering necessities such as lighting, fans, vaccine fridge and computers, ensuring that essential services can respond to the crisis and deliver urgent medical care at the centers.

Lumos Nigeria, which currently serves over 100,000 households and enterprises, was selected on the strength of its immediate preparedness to respond with products, inventory, technological capabilities and efficient delivery track record.

Lumos is a market-leading provider of high-quality solar home systems in Africa, designed to make reliable and clean power accessible to everyone. We combine easy to use technology with a personalised service to power prosperity for millions of people.

Solar Energy Market Projected at USD 223.3 Billion by 2026 – Valuates Reports

Solar energy is harnessed by using various technologies such as photovoltaics (PV), which directly convert light to electricity; concentrating solar power (CSP), which uses heat from the sun (thermal energy) to drive utility-scale, electric turbines; and solar heating and cooling (SHC) systems

The global solar energy market size was valued at USD 52.5 Billion in 2018 and is projected to reach USD 223.3 Billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 20.5% from 2019 to 2026

The global Solar energy market is expected to witness rapid growth due to declining costs of solar energy equipment, coupled with increased competitiveness of battery storage.

TRENDS INFLUENCING THE SOLAR ENERGY MARKET SIZE

Factors such as clear federal policies such as solar investment tax credit, rapidly dropping prices, and rising demand for renewable energy in both the private and public sectors is expected to drive the solar energy market size. Furthermore, due to the boom in rooftop installations, the demand for solar cells has gained significant momentum.

The need for parabolic troughs and solar power towers for generating electricity is expected to fuel demand for solar energy market size.

In the last decade, the cost of installing solar has plummeted by more than 70%, allowing the industry to grow into new markets and deploy thousands of systems nationwide. This reduction in cost is expected to increase the solar energy market size.

Increasing environmental issues such as greenhouse gas emissions followed by increasing energy consumption are driving industries towards more efficient and cost-effective energy supplies. Such factors would likely push the development of the solar energy market size during the forecast period.

The COVID-19 pandemic has seriously affected the solar energy market size. While utility-scale solar has not been as heavily impacted, growth projections are now lower than expected, and the virus has created significant uncertainty for projects under development.

With the production of photovoltaic-based power distribution systems, the competition among manufacturers has greatly increased.

Solar Energy: Morocco ready to share its experience with Chad

Morocco, which has one of the largest solar parks in the world, is willing to share its expertise and know-how in renewable energy with Chad within the frame of a south-south and solidarity-based cooperation.

The pledge was made lately by Moroccan Ambassador to N’Djamena, Abdellatif Erroja, during the launch ceremony of the “solar energy project for rural development in Chad”. Moroccan National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) is participating in this project, which is supported by the Islamic Development Bank.

Morocco, a regional leader in renewable energy, puts the African continent at the center of its foreign policy and spares no efforts to enhance African integration, added the diplomat, affirming that the electricity sector can serve as an engine for African integration and socioeconomic sustainable development.

The electricity and solar energy sector in Africa offers huge investment opportunities for win-win partnership, underlined the Moroccan ambassador.

Chad’s solar energy project for rural development aims to provide reliable and affordable electricity supply to the inhabitants of the Toukra–Mandelia locality, south of the capital city (N’Djamena).

Morocco’s Noor Ouarzazate solar complex is one of the world’s largest solar farms. Built on an area of more than 3,000 hectares – the size of 3,500 football fields-, the solar complex produces enough electricity to power a city twice the size of Marrakesh.

Situated at the gateway to Africa, the whole complex provides 580 megawatts, saving the planet from over 760,000 tons of carbon emissions.
